AN ORIGIN STORY WITH NO HARD EDGES

He was never
going to keep
it together.

The artist finished the eyes. Gave him a glorious curl of a mustache. Then stepped away for one very ordinary moment.

By the time they came back, the portrait had developed opinions about its own shape. The chin was on the floor. The nose had somewhere else to be. The hair, somehow, was perfect.

Meltache walked out of the frame.
We built a world around the puddle.
